What Must Be Done to Improve Education in Arizona?

Last night, KAET's Horizon took a look at this question and hosted a panel of education leaders as they discuss options and opportunities to make the state more responsive to the needs of its students. Scheduled guests included former Arizona Superintendent of Public Instruction Lisa Graham Keegan, Arizona Business and Education Coalition Executive Director Susan Carlson, and Arizona Board of Regents Vice President Ernest Calderon.

AEA President John Wright is shown in the beginning of the program offering his ideas on how to improve education in Arizona. Watch the video of the program and leave a comment on some of your solutions.

Education can't overcome the deficiencies of parents. Until parents support, with more than words, the education of their children no educational institution can overcome those shortcomings. Nor should it try!

Don't blame schools for kids failures (50% of blacks and brown kids drop out, for example)--blame their parents. I'm tired of spending money which goes to waste because the family is fractured, drunk, drugged, or just plain seeking their own pleasures without consideration of their (THEIR) kids.

Make education relevant to those students who do not necessarily aspire to get a college education. As early as junior high, students should be able to chose a curriculum path that offers basic academcis as well as vocational training in a field that interests them.

I did not view the video yet , but because I am a teacher and have VERY limited time on my hands, I felt it necessary to respond quickly. REDUCE CLASS SIZES. Almost every teacher I know believes he/she could be much more effective in educating students when teaching in classrooms that are not packed to the gills. This of course means hiring more qualified teachers. Even if there was money for class size reduction, it doesn't appear AZ will attract qualified teachers at the shamefully low salaries being offered around the state.

Invest, invest, invest in education. Major businesses in the state offer nice salaries to attract and retain the brightest and the best, why can't we in education do the same? Not only will higher salaries attract a higher caliber of teacher, it will also lessen the load carried by many educators that are forced to work a second job to make ends meet. Maybe if the engineers and computer technicians had to work a second job to make ends meet, there would be a real discussion on salaries and attracting the brightest and the best.

The education community has itself to blame for allowing those not in the classroom determine our fate. It is time to get active and engaged to speak out for quality public schools. Invest not only financial support for our schools, but invest in your expertise and share it as the discussion moves forward. We all have our stories about education, and they need to be told.

None of the other things suggested are going to work until we get rid of the idiots in the state legislature who believe the children in this state are better off staying as dumb as the legislators.

Tom Mihalchick has a point. Everything we need can do in our schools to improve student achievement leads us back to the legislature. So, we can blog and talk about what we want, or we can get organized and "get rid of the idiots in the state legislature", as suggested.

I think Ed Day is one of the most powerful ways to make an impression. We need to have more such gatherings. Not just once or twice per year. When such events are orderly and professional, they carry a lot of weight.

When enough people yell "help!" together, eventually someone is going to hear.

The main problem is nobody, but the teachers (not all) actually care about children. Until legislators and administrators put children before money, it will never change.
