Legislative Majority Attempting to Pass their Budget on Tuesday

The Senate is scheduled to convene at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, August 4. The Governor and Senate President Bob Burns are desperate to pass the budget tomorrow so the Governor’s sales tax can be on the November ballot. By all accounts the vote is extremely close and the budget has already passed the House. This is the last chance to stop this devastating budget.

We need you at the capitol tomorrow to let legislators know that we will not stand idly by and let them make massive cuts to our public schools. We are meeting in the Senate Gallery at 1 p.m. tomorrow and will hold a demonstration at 4 p.m. on the mall in front of the capitol. Your participation at one or both of these times is critical to stopping this budget! If you cannot arrive until later than 4:00 p.m., come and join us then. Re: Legislative Majority Attempting to Pass their Budget on Tuesday by Billie

Colleagues:

This is a blatant attempt to get back at teachers for embarrassing the Legislative leadership last spring. They want to break the "union" and since they assume we won't all stand together, they win. To overcome this, we need every teacher in the state to act, to write letters, to stop enabling the gutting of education in the state.

Enabling? Yes, every time we spend money out of our own pockets we're enabling this system. The Leg. doesn't have to come up with soft capital because the teachers will spend their own money, or so they think.

I would like to propose that we stop supplementing the school budget out of our own pockets. I'm not going to supply anything this year and if it means fewer labs or a child has to go without a pencil, so be it. We are facing a 3% pay cut in addition to losing our 301 money (am I right about this?). I'm not willing to shell out my fewer dollars to support students who have resources but choose to spend them at Starbucks and not for school supplies. It would be different, maybe, for those of us at a Title I school but most of us are not.

I hope we can agree to stand firm and stand together. You know what will happen if we don't -- are you willing to accept those consequences?

I am deeply disturbed by what this state is proposing in education cuts. Public schools are the foundation of our education system and our teachers are already paid way below the amount they are worth. Why not try taxing the people that make more money instead of hurting those of us working class that are just trying to make a living.

We must be good a joke for the rest of the country. I just find this time wasting appalling. If we teachers behaved in this manner we would surely be hearing about it on a daily basis! Their job is not finished and they go on vacation! What's that all about?! Even elementary school children know "No work, No fun!" I sure hope the citizens of Arizona remember this debacle during election time ... these people need to be put out of work!
